Salton Sea State Recreation Area

California's largest lake, sitting 227 feet below sea level and shrinking every year. The northeast shore is a Pacific Flyway birding stop — 400-some species — with camping, fishing jetties, and a visitor center open peak season. The "sand" near the water is mostly pulverized fish bone, and yes, the smell is real.
